First Day of Pre-K

Just like a lot of other people in my part of the world, yesterday was ‘back to school’ day. The Mouse bounded into our room at around 615am exclaiming, ‘I get to go to big-boy school today!’. He was too excited to eat his breakfast {which he later regretted}. He nearly ran out the door when we left to walk the 2.5 blocks to his elementary school. I was able to make him stand still out in the front yard just long enough to snap this beauty with my iPhone.

He looked so cute in his jeans and Batman Chucks. He looked so big with his hair done like daddy’s, and in his polo. And yet he looked so tiny with that huge backpack and lunchbox.

He looked ever smaller when we started getting close to his school and fifth grades started skateboarding by us. I immediately started crying. Was this right? Are we sure this is where he’s supposed to be? These kids are all HUGE, and I swear, we just moved into our house down the street a few weeks ago. I was JUST on maternity leave, unpacking a whole house with a newborn at home with me. We’re scheduled to have his three month photos in our front yard in a couple of weeks. Right?

I pulled it together as we walked through the front door. We heard the traffic guard yell, ‘SIXTEEN MINUTES!’ as we walked in – so I knew we had at least a few minutes to say goodbye and get him settled. He knew exactly where he was going – and led us down all the right hallways to find his own classroom. His teacher helped show him how to put his backpack and lunchbox away in his locker. Then he sat down, and immediately started playing with some blocks that were waiting for him at his table. I was able to snap a few photos, kiss his soft cheek, and then we were off.

And I immediately started crying again. Thank goodness I had the husband with me to hold my hand on the walk home.

He told me when I picked him up that afternoon that he had a great time. That his teacher was so nice, and that he got to sing in music class. Oh, and then he mentioned, ‘I don’t want to go back to pre-k tomorrow, I’m exhausted’. LOL. I told him he has a good 20 more years of school, he had better get used to it. And for that matter, I guess I should get used to it as well.

A locker? OMG ::sob:: I know this day is still a few years away for me, but I’m totally tearing up. I’m so glad he had a great first day.

  3. Absolutely adorable! I’m looking forward to this day, but he will be almost 4 years old so we have lots of time yet! Actually…only a year!

I was sobbing when I left Deacon on Monday. We didn’t even get to walk him in to his classroom! :( The theory at the school is leaving fast leads to fewer tears. Of course, he was all, “BYE!” when we dropped him off.

Awe, I’m remembering my girls’ first days of preschool while reading your post. It’s such a bittersweet time! I cried when I signed the papers at the school, when I dropped them off, and when I picked them up! lol

OMG!! So cute!!! I can’t wait for this next year, but I know that I’m going to be a hot mess.

  10. Aww so cute.  I have tears in my eyes for you.  He is going to have a great year and learn so much!! :) I am going to be such a mess when my dude starts Kindergarten.  He will probably stay at the home daycare until then but we will see.  He may need “more”.
