A LETTER TO MY FOUR YEAR OLD.

Dear Mouse.

Today, you are four. As I type this post, four years ago today, I had already been in labor for over 24 hours. It’s amazing how slowly those 43 hours of labor went, but how quickly the past 4 years have flown by.

We brought you home this tiny little being, and we had absolutely no idea what we were supposed to do with you. We couldn’t believe that we were responsible for this little life in front of us. You have gone from baby, to toddler, and now you’re a pre-schooler. As I watch your baby brother toddle after his big brother in our halls, I think back to when you were toddling around here. I can almost see you right this very second holding on to the side of the door frame as you taught yourself how to step down into our sunken living room. I can see your baby fine blonde hair. I can see your footie pajamas. I can see you jumping in your jumperoo next to the couch. I see you and your blankie rocking with daddy at the end of the day.

And now what do I see? Now I see a little boy in cotton shorts and muscle shirts … sweaty from running around the backyard with his daddy. I see him brush his teeth and climb into bed with his favorite stuffed elephant {you and Horton are lifelong pals, of this I am sure}. I see your imagination come to life with your Harry Potter wand, with your favorite Legos, with your Iron Man costume. I hear you making up adventures and shouting them to your brother. I see you create whole worlds with a tub of PlayDoh.

This Summer you’re going to take swim lessons, and learn how to swim without floaties. This August, you’re going to start pre-k at a REAL elementary school. This Fall, we’re thinking you’ll probably be ready for soccer.

This birthday has been hard for your mommy. It’s taken me over 3 hours just to write this simple letter as I think about how big you have gotten, and how you aren’t my baby anymore. As you grow though, you have no idea how proud you make me. Whether it be saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ or helping your brother do something, spelling out a word, counting the carrots on your plate … or especially when you say, ‘Mommy, I’m your Mouse.’

Yes, sweet boy. Yes you are my Mouse. And you always will be.

Happy Birthday, sweetheart.
