Yesterday the husband, Mouse and I had a date to the movies.
First off, can I just I love this chick’s hair? It’s kind of amazing. Although I feel for the dude or dudette at Pixar that had to animate it, lol.
So, how did the movie go? Was it any good? How did the Mouse like it? Was it scary? Did he spill popcorn all over the person in front of us?
We left the Froggy with family and chose a matinee showing at a local theater. We got a vat of popcorn to be shared three ways, and I must have asked the Mouse if he had to pee about 30 times before the show actually started. This is the 2nd movie he’s been to with us {although he’s been to other movies with other family members}. We chose to NOT see this in 3D because the Mouse refuses to wear the glasses anyway, so no point in spending the extra money.
Here is my overall impression of the movie: It wasn’t very ‘Pixarish’ {is that a word?}. It was more of a ‘Disney’ movie to me than a ‘Pixar’ movie. While the main character {Merida} was very well done, the supporting characters and story line weren’t there like they were in Toy Story, or Finding Nemo, or even Up. I found myself thinking throughout the movie that this had all been done before with Tangled and Brother Bear. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the movie. There were really funny parts, really amazing animation and scenery, and I loved Merida’s character. I just felt that it lacked the magic of previous Pixar movies. I didn’t come out of it thinking, ‘wow, that was an amazing movie’.
The Mouse, however, LOVED it. He loved the fighting, he loved the bow and arrows, he loved the funny little brothers. He got a *little* clingy during a few of the bear fights, but by the end he was cheering along with the rest of the crowd. He also got through the whole thing without trying to climb over the seat in front of us, running up and down the stairs, or needing to pee four thousand times {or even once}.
So. Is it appropriate for little kiddos? I think it probably depends on the kiddo themselves. There are definitely some fighting/scary sequences. If your kid can get through Beauty and the Beast, or Cars 2, The Princess and the Frog {dude, the voodoo stuff is SCARY} or the Incredibles … they’ll probably do fine. If they’re more of a Cinderella/Finding Nemo/Ratatouille kinda kiddo, you might want to wait on this one.
Did you ‘brave’ the movies with your kiddos this weekend? What did you think?

I agree with you – it seemed more of a Disney movie than Pixar. In my review I wrote something like that as well, that it wasn’t as coherent / had as many themes/morals than other Disney/Pixar movies I’ve seen recently.
Nice review with practical information! I will take it under advisement.
Also I just have to say I love that you just took Froggy to this movie without making a whole thing about the main character being female and/or a princess. I overheard this whole conversation yesterday where relatives were debating if it would be okay to take their sons to Brave because it was a “girl movie.” I wanted to be like, “Dude, if you had a daughter would you be like, “I don’t know about that Elmo character. I mean, he’s a *boy* so will my daughter be able to relate? And I’m not sure about this whole “Lion King” business either…”"
The Mouse loves princess movies! We watch Tangled regularly. He’s a fan of Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Ponies too. ::gasp::
Thanks for the review. I want to bring my 3 year old too it at some point this summer.
Just saw it this morning in 3d and we loved it! I’m definitely downloading the soundtrack too. I’m somewhat of a Disney fanatic so the fact that it was more Disney-ish than Pixar is fine by me
. And I completely agree about the hair…it was on my mind the entire time….I want her hair!!!! There were definitely several ‘ha ha’ moments, which makes me want to see it again because you can bet I missed a few. Funny, yesterday we were in the mall and stopped into the Disney store for a bit and there was a cast member there walking around dressed as Merida…only it must have been a slow time of day because there weren’t any kids around her and she was texting. I’m pretty sure that is big-time frowned upon!
DH and I took our 3.5 year old today. He loved it. The bear scenes were a lot scarier then either DH and I thought they were going to be, but little guy was great during it. I loved the girl’s hair too. This was little guy;s 7th or 8th movie with us. He does great at the theaters.
Glad you hear you enjoyed and apparently so did your little one. And I’ve heard others remark that it wasn’t what is typical of Pixar. We haven’t seen it yet and I’m not sure we will.
