So we’re down to a week and a half before I hop on a plane and fly to New York City for BlogHer12. Am I starting to freak out?
Yes. Yes I am.
The party invites are in and inputted into my schedule {and yes, there are 3 separate apps being utilized for that}. All of the hotel/flight reservation info is catalogued. Phone numbers have been gathered for those I plan {hope} to meet. Posts have been scheduled. The hairs are getting cut/colored this week and the nails did next weekend. The clothes/shoes/accessories have been bought and put together into slammin’ outfits. Business cards have arrived {squee!}. The iPhone has a new branded cover, and the iPad has a new case with keyboard.
A lot of veterans of this conference have blog posts dedicated to getting ready for this trip, and the one piece of advice I keep seeing is, ‘don’t spend gobs of money on new clothes/stuff for this conference – shop from your wardrobe first’.
Hmmmm. But what if your wardrobe didn’t exist to begin with?
Okay, that’s dramatic {who, me?!}. I did have *somewhat* of a wardrobe, but let’s be honest … 98% of it is not something I want to make a personal statement to complete strangers with. I had zero dresses {other than a cotton maxi dress and an Easter dress} in my closet. I had one pair of jeans that were worn in the knees from crawling around on the floor with my kids. My shoe selection was entirely from Target’s clearance section 3 seasons ago. And let’s not even talk about the state of my bras. I haven’t had a real hair cut in at least 6 months, and the past two times I’ve had my highlights done it was in my bathroom by … me.
Basically, I NEEDED this. I needed this excuse to spend some time, money and energy on ME. Isn’t that sad? I came home from the mall today with $172 worth of new bras and panties from Vistoria’s Secret and my husbands reaction was, ‘it shouldn’t take you going out of town and meeting strangers for you to want to spend some money on yourself’.
I know. I KNOW.
Regardless, this was the kick in the butt I needed to address some aesthetic issues I was having with myself. Shopping from my closet is WAY more fun now.
p.s. Why – WHY – are bras so dang expensive? Hmm? Please explain this to me.

Yay! I love those outfits. I always say Blogher is like back to school for me. It’s the only time of year I seem to have no problem spending money on myself for new clothes, shoes, accessories.
I found myself shopping today as well! Excited that I got a couple new shirts that not only can be worn at BlogHer, but also can be worn for work. (and I desperately needed some new work clothes!)
YAY for a good reason to splurge on yourself.
Cute outfits! Where did you do your shopping??
Geez, ALL over the place. 2 of my dresses are from eBay, the last is from Macys. Forever21 and Banana Republic were hit up as well!
Love the outfits! Can’t wait to meet you at the airport
I needed to go shopping today, but dear hubby wasn’t feeling all that well, so now I’m scrambling! Long list of things to do……HELP!
You husband is completely right, and I’m pretty sure mine said the same thing!
I currently only own 1 bra that fits me comfortably right now. For some reason I just can’t bring myself to buy new ones though, knowing the babe is almost here. Ugh, I feel you.
You, my dear, are a special snowflake. If I were as preggo as you I wouldn’t have wanted to spend money on more maternity clothes either. Good thing you have an awesome sponsor!
New bras are on my BlogHer to-do list. I currently have 4 nursing bras that I’ve been wearing for the last year…I stopped nursing almost a month ago. I need to bite the monetary bullet and go to Victoria’s Secret and get some new ones because the selection at Target just isn’t cutting it.
New bras are a wonderful thing!! And I love your outfit choices! I went to Nordstrom Rack the other day and scored a lovely silver, sparkly dress for Sparklecorn at the cost effective price of eleven-bucks. The rest of my purchases were all “Back to School” (2nd grade teacher, here) outfits that I might wear to BlogHer, too! 2 birds, 1 stone! Score!
Are those some of your outfits?? LOVE! You are going to look fab!
i love your outfit choices! adorable! and jealous!
I went shopping this weekend and I’m not even going to BlogHer. We were just in the San Marcos outlets, where they have a VS Outlet. What what! But although my boobs aren’t big enough to require a bra more than $20, I found that sometimes that’s exactly what you need. You NEED to feel sexy and put together. After I had the baby and felt all frumpy from the days covered in some other person’s body fluids (bleh, that’s awful just typing it) I went to Vicky and got a new bra and felt so much better. Why the hell do I need a bright blue bra? I don’t. But I love it.
Have tons and tons of fun.
I think spending money on ourselves is something all moms deal with! My husband tells me to go get a pedi and mani and I still find a reason why I shouldn’t spend the money! Even though it’s not about the money to him, he just wants me to spend time on me.
And I wish I knew the reason why bras are expensive! It’s rediculous!
Yay for shopping and pampering.
The outfits you picked out look cute!
I have always wondered the same about VS stuff.. so expensive!
I find myself always buying clothes for my daughter rather than myself.. I really need to buy for myself more often – it feels so good when I do!
Have fun at BlogHer!
girl you should be doing your shopping in NYC!!!!! they have the best selection ever and no sales tax on items under like $110. i’m super excited to hear how BlogHer goes. will you have any time for any fun touristy NYC time?
You got me wondering whether I need to go shopping for BlogHer. I wasn’t really thinking about it until this post.
how did you get invited to the private parties did you make friends with the sponsors or was it random?
@LorrieBrooks Hi Lorrie – honestly, most of them were completely random, but there are some parties that will allow you to sign up for them – you really have to watch Twitter!
